Pajama People

I was pretty blown away by Allston, Mass. Pajama People when I heard their I Like Your Rugs EP this morning.

First- the songs are fantastic…haunting yet uplifting while hitting all their marks dipping and swerving like they were reading your mind. The EP flips between male and female vocal leads. Handmedown touches on pop moments a la Ariel Pink and late 70’s AM while female fronted mid-tempo Human and Getaway have a Widowspeak/Mazzy Star thing happening and may just be the true gems of this EP.

Second- the sound…damn. As a mixer and lover of the sounds of records for the mixing alone, this is one of the coolest sounding lo-fi records I have heard in a while. The closest thing to compare it to would be the Unknown Mortal Orchestra stuff with a dash of Coco Rosie. Bedroom-y but luxurious.

“Everyone Should Know”

LCD Sound who?? Lovin’ the bounce.

YARDGAMES’ Last Picnic in Limbo has a ton of charm.  Between them, Pajama People, and Salvador Jolly there is some serious experimental pop going down in Allston.

“Shoes”

Last Thursday whilst hanging with one of their Allston compatriots, I got a message from Pajama People that they had dropped a new EP.  Being a fan of the first EP, I was certainly excited to hear the new stuff.

The 7 track After The Gold Rugs, is much sleepier than the previous I like Your Rugs EP.  And while the there are a few less catchy tunes, it’s a more cerebral and cohesive experience than ILYR.  Check out the AM radio gold of “Shoes” to slide into Pajama People’s mood.

“Indiana”

I’m down with what Abadabad is up to.

thenewblack:

The homie Jimmy Morris of Head Underwater premiered a brand new Abadabad track today, and the first thing that came to mind when I heard that track was FINALLY. The soul dripping brilliance behind Abadabad is Knoxville, TN’s Jeremy Lee Given, who’s southern roots have been breaking hearts and wetting beds over the past year with his incredible solo record Old Flames.

Abadabad’s latest track, “Indiana” is the musical progression of Jeremy’s work as an artist. From Abadabad’s start as a sleepy, pop-heavy bedroom project into a five piece full-on indie rock band with an updated take on vintage analog, and Jeremy’s vocals leading Abadabad’s songs into my heart. Killin’ it. Definitely an artist to check out at this year’s CMJ Music Marathon.

Check Abadabad’s FB page for CMJ dates and lots of random.

“They Keep Saying”

Imagine early ’70s horror movies or some creepy 16mm found footage of the same time….then have a first listen at this haunting slow-burner from Allston, MA based Pajama People.  This is a real-night-time-candle-lit-room-Ouija-board-freak-yourself out jam…I like it.

Recorded in their home studio in Winchester, MA this is the first single off their 2012 debut LP.

McWolf

“Feel It Out”

I would have so rocked this track when I was ten while I played with G.I. Joe’s on my bedroom floor.  I would have been stoked too, it would have been my jam.

There really is so much delightful as fuckness when it comes to McWolf which is the side project of Welly Netto (of ABADABAD, Rodeo Church).  The 4 track self titled EP up at Bandcamp is just chock full of goodies.  I’m very much in head over heels love with the eargasm Feel It Out.  McWolf (can’t express how much I think this name is brilliant) is for fans of Abadabad, Surfer Blood, Bombay Bicycle Club and The Drums.  If you are smitten too you can download the entire album for a name your price value over at Bandcamp!

Because when it’s getting tough I’m gonna feel it out…
